A sex-stratified trans-ancestral meta-analysis of GWAS for ischemic stroke

Men are not mice, but neither are they women. In other words, (biological) sex matters. This is evident in cardiovascular disease: plaque erosion is more common in women, whereas men have rupturing plaque. Intriguingly women often present with ‘stable’ plaques, but still have symptoms (that is a heart attack or stroke).

So, when you’re in the business of investigating the genetics of ischemic stroke sex matters. Back in 2019 we started this project in last fall I present our preliminary results at the bi-annual ISGC workshop in Boston. Without revealing to much - we are still including new cohorts and a new round of analyses is forthcoming - I can say: yes, there are clear genetic differences between men and women.

More to come soon!
